RANDY BROWN OUT
Injury-Riddled Jackets To Meet Haines City Tonight
The Daily Commercial
Thursday, November 18, 1960
The flu bug has teamed up with a trio of injuries to hit the Jackets squad hard and cause Head Coach
Whitey Smith and his crew no end of concern as they try to come up with a possible starting eleven for
tonight's home tilt against the steadily improving Hornets of Haines City.
Center Mike Sheets is still nursing a leg infection from the Maynard Evans game and is not expected to
see any duty. Willie McCallum is expected to take over his offensive center spot while Charles Sellars
fill in as defensive linebacker. Both of these youngsters handled the job very well in last week's 35 to 0
romp over Winter Park. Gerald Fletcher is still among the walking wounded with a serious and painful
ankle injury and is not expected to start.
Randy Brown, whom the Jackets have called upon all year to come up with the big play has also been
out of action with the same nose, injury that bothered him last year. Junior Varsity Quarterback John
and Ronnie Young have been alternating at this spot as the Jackets try to come up with a capable
replacement. Over at the end spot where Fletcher will be absent Bill McBride and tackle Jimmy Pelt
been working out with the defensive eleven. Hunt Paulling has been a victim of the flu bug all week
while Dillard Copeland one whale of a fine defensive linebacker came out for practice the first time
yesterday. You might say that it was anybody's guess as to who will be where in the starting lineup the
Jackets will have to throw together at Memorial Field tonight.
At this time it looks like Max Wettstein and Jon Axford are just about set at the wings with J. J.
Marcus Lawrence, and Tom Willis sharing the tackle duties. Robert Mock and Charles Sellers
be the stating guards with Willie McCallum over the ball at Center. In the backfield it is expected that
John Gray and Ronnie Young will see action at Quarterback with Roger Clark and David Herlong
the fullback's duties and Doug Mumford and David Webster teaming up at the halfback spots.
The single wing attack of the Joe Stangry coached Hornets will feature Bobby McTeer and Meredith
O'Neal in the tailback and wingback spots with David Howell and Robert Dicks the blocking backs.
Their forward wall is sure to give the Jackets plenty of trouble with a pair of giants in the person of
Co-Capt. Bob Lyle a 6'2" 235 lb. roving guard and Capt. Wayne Jaeger a 6'1" 210 lb. tackler. Rounding
out the Green and White wave up front will be Doug Carter and Gary Ashley on the wings with Larry
Bradley at the other tackle Arnold Feagle holding down the other guard position, and Charles Holland
The Elks Bowl bound Jackets have sure got their work cut out for them tonight as they face a single
attack for the first time this year that they will have to stop while coming up with a respectable attack of
their own without the services of their No. 1 threat Handy Randy Brown. Kickoff time is set for eight with
the Jackets in their weakened physical condition going into the game as underdogs a role they have
appeared in many times before this year.
