Jackets Face Tough Tavares Defense In Bowl Tilt

Bulldogs Yield TD's Sparingly To All Opponents

By Col. Fred Belton
Staff Writer
The Daily Commercial
Monday, November 21, 1960

When Umatilla's Bob skipper took a pass from Charles Babb and ran 10 yards for a touchdown
against the Tavares Bulldogs he became the first player to score against a Tavares team on its home
field this
year. He also became the first visiting player to cause a score to be registered on the new electric
scoreboard installed through the efforts of the Tavares Quarterback Club.

Until the second quarter of the last regular game of the season the Tavares Varsity Bulldogs and
Tavares
Junior High Bulldogs had successfully blocked all attempts by visiting teams to cross their goal lines.
Skipper put an end to that feat.

Skippers six points were otherwise harmless as the Bulldogs of Tavares rolled over their namesakes
from
the Sportsman's Town 27-6 for a clean sweep in Mid-Lakes Conference play and the conference
championship for 1960.

The Mid-Lakes Conference champions for 1960 will now turn their attention to the Elks Bowl game at
Leesburg's Memorial Field Friday night, Dec. 2, where they will face the Yellow Jackets of Leesburg
High
School in a game being staged by Leesburg Elks for the crippled children in the Harry Anna Home at
Umatilla.

Tavares carries a 7-0-0 conference and 8-1-1 season's record into the Elks Bowl. The lone loss was at
the hands of Colonial of Orlando by the barest of margins, 12-13 and the tie a 13-13 game at Crescent
City.

In contrast to allowing Colonial to score 13 points for a win and Crescent City 13 for a tie, the Bulldogs
held eight other opponents to a total of 13 points, seven by Mount Dora's Golden Hurricanes and six by
the Umatilla Bulldogs. They closed the scoring door to six teams, beating Eustis 6-0; Lake Weir 26-0;
Clermont 14-0; St. Cloud 34-0 and Groveland 40-0 in conference play and Florida Military School 39-0
out of conference.

Tickets for the Ninth Annual Elks Bowl at Leesburg are priced at $1.25 for adults, 50 cents for children
with an additional 50 cents for a reserved seat.
