Jackets Journey To Winter Garden; Clark And Young Out
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, October 21, 1960
The Fightin' Yellow Jackets of Leesburg High will be playing without the services of their big fullback
Roger Clark and minus defensive back Ronnie Young as they journey to Winter Garden tonight to take
on the Orange Belt Conference foe Lakeview High.
With Clark and Young out for the next two weeks as the result of injuries suffered in earlier games.
a double blow for the Jackets who have high hopes of bouncing back following losses in the last two
weeks to Wildwood and Auburndale after twin wins over DeLand and Apopka. To add double trouble to
the woes of Whitey Smith and his staff both David Herlong and Dickie Huff who have spelled Clark at
fullback slot have been going at half speed this week while they nurse leg injuries.
The brunt of their offense is expected to rest squarely on the shoulders of their triple threat star
Quarterback Randy Brown. This is a familiar role for the youngster who has been coming through time
and again all season long. The speed twins Doug Mumford and David Webster will be running from
halfback spots with Webster nursing a severely jammed thumb on his right had. Bobby Lowery who
defensive standout for the Jackets in their first two games but suffered a broken nose in the Apopka
may see some offensive action as well. Max Wettstein who continues to improve in his all around play
spell Brown at Quarterback when he is not playing on the flank.
Handicapped with an injury riddled backfield the Jackets forward wall is expected to carry the brunt of
load in tonight's game and there is every indication that this game will be decided on the line of
scrimmage. Expected to start on the wings are Jon Axford and Arthur Spence with Jimmy Pelt and Jim
Brunson at the tackle slots. Hunt Paulling and Robert Mock will be at the guard spots with Mike Sheets
center, Dillard Copeland is expected to be a linebacker with the defensive unit.
Moving up to a starting berth with the defensive eleven is Freshman tackle J. J. Kimmons who did
fine job in the Auburndale game last week to earn himself a starting assignment.
Meanwhile the Red Devils of Lakeview high have been catching their jumps as well. They managed an
opening game win over Kissimmee but have since dropped games to Wildwood, DeLand, and Haines
City, the years past they have been able to contain the Jackets well, suffering a 6 to 0 loss in 1956 while
racking up wins of 15 to 6, 27 to 6, and rally pouring it on last year to the tune of 52 to 6. This was the
worse loss the Jackets suffered all year long but graduation hurt the Paul Adams coached eleven with
loss of the likes of Quarterback Frank Browder, Halfbacks Hollis Holden and Hughlan Martin, and
Stanley Starr, Larry Schultz, and Wayne Collier.
They pose a real threat though in the person of six foot five inch 230 lb. Halfback Maurice Hazen and a
fine hard running Fullback Pat Moran. Ephie Reid gives their T offense an outside threat with his end
sweeps while John Terrell is an adequate Quarterback who likes to crank up his throwing arm with the
Halfback Hazen as his principal target. This is a squad that finished third in the OBC last year with six
and four losses while the Jackets were an also ran in Conference competition.
