Jackets Step Up Practice Grid Sessions

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Tuesday, September 14, 1960

The Jackets of Leesburg High closed out one of their longest practice sessions of the year yesterday
afternoon on a high note and will cap off practice for the week with tapering off drills today and
tomorrow
as they work to perfect their timing. Contact work will be kept at a minimum today. A tribute to the fine
physical condition and mental attitude of the boys this year has been the fact that they have come
through their most rugged scrimmage schedule in years without a major injury.

Line Coach Jack Love and the Jacket forward wall have worked long and hard many times after the
rest of
the squad has left the field and the young yet inexperienced linemen have certainly come a long way in
the few weeks of practice they have had this year.

A welcome sight on the practice field this week has been Gerald Fletcher. This senior 160-lb.
Letterman
End had been working out in pads and will no doubt see defensive action come Friday night and
DeLand
at Memorial Field. The loss of Orlando Boone transfer Bob Swarthout for at least the first game is sure
to
put the pressure right on junior Arthur Spence at the other end position. Swarthout has been nursing a
bad shin bruise that has failed to respond to treatment. It is expected that he will dress out though, but
that he will not be able to be used to any extent.

Dillard Copeland has been working with the defensive unit and has just about notched himself a
starting
berth with this eleven on the strength of his fine play and all around versatility thus far.

The age and experience will be with the DeLand Bulldogs at Memorial field Friday night but the
continued
all around competitive spirit will be with the Jackets and is sure to go a long way come kick off time at
eight.
