Jackets Working To Brush Up Defense Game Before Opener

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, September 11, 1960

With but one week of practice left before the home opener against DeLand at Memorial Field next
Friday night Coach Whitey Smith along with his staff and the fifty or more members of the Leesburg
High Jackets
football squad have been working long and hard to brush up and perfect their defensive assignments
by
game time at eight.

Top priority has been given to this phase of the game and scrimmage this week will be topped practice
field today. In earlier sessions this week the junior varsity made a mockery of the varsity defenses
tearing
up the Jacket forward wall as the JayVee backs racked up long gains with ease.

The Jacket flanks continue to pose the biggest problem for the coaching staff. The loss of James
Walker,
a 175 lb. senior, who because of a back condition, has had to give up athletics has left a big hole at
this
spot. Moving up to fill the gap has been Orlando Boone transfer Bob Swarthout and junior Arthur
Spence,
But Swarthout with shin bruise and Spence with a shoulder injury have had to avoid contact work this
week while at the other end Gerald Fletcher, senior letterman, is still recuperating from a late summer
off
with a game scrimmage on the operation and will miss at least the season's opener. This has left Jon
Axford, a junior, as the only end physically able to go all the way.

DeLand with sixteen lettermen back and blessed with two deep in those middle line positions is sure
to
keep the pressure on the Jacket forward wall throughout the game. This will put the Jackets to the test
right from the opening kickoff and will no doubt be where the game will be won.
