Leesburg Wallops Favored DeLand by 14-6 Score

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, September 18, 1960

The Jackets of Leesburg High jumped on the Bulldogs of DeLand High at Memorial Field Friday night
racking up TD's in the first and second quarter to post an opening season win over the visitors 14 to 6.

The Jacket unveiled their secret weapon in the person of Fullback Doug Mumford who teamed up with
Halfbacks Roger Clark and David Webster and Quarterback Randy Brown to push across a six pointer
in
the second quarter from five yards out. Mumford also took off on a 58 yard TD jaunt in the fourth quarter
only to have the play nullified by a penalty.

As a matter of fact before the night was over it looked like a walking contest between the officials as
they
paced off 130 yards against the Jackets and another 30 yards against the Bulldogs for a grand total of
160 yards topping the visitors 106 yards gained on the ground as well as their total offensive yardage.

The Jackets started early and they started fast taking the opening kickoff on their own forty two. They
mixed a pass play with a twenty yard gallop by the speedster David Webster to chalk up a first down on
the DeLand thirty six. From that point the clever Randy Brown covered the rest of the way on a
Quarterback keeper play to cross the double stripe standing up. He then stepped back and booted the
extra point.

DeLand was unable to move the ball from the kickoff and were forced to punt. The Jackets moved
towards paydirt again with a pass play that clicked for twenty eight yards and a first down on the visitors
four. Two fifteen yard penalties set them back however and they lost the ball via the fumble route.

The twin elevens exchanged punts and the Volusia County eleven moved from their own forty five with a
series of two first downs to give them the ball on the Jackets eighteen.

Junior Fullback Milton Culp carried it over from this point as the scoreboard clock ticked off twenty
seconds in the second period. The teams exchanged punts in the third quarter with one of Brown's
kicks
rolling out on the visitors one yard line.

The final scoring came when the Jackets moved from their own forty two. A Randy Brown aerial was
plucked out of the air by an alert DeLand defense but their joy was short lived as they gave up the ball
on
a fumble soon afterward on their own twenty eight.

The Jackets mixed their plays well to set up a first down on the five and from this point Doug Mumford
carried it over for the TD. At one time it looked like they had the Senior Fullback stopped on the goalline
but he was not to be denied and a second effort got the six points. Randy Brown placed kicked the extra
point.

DeLand moved well in the third quarter with a series of four consecutive first downs to post a first and
goal on the Jackets ten. The Jacket defensive unit held the visitors however and that ended any scoring
threat for the night. It turned into a kicking game in Leesburg territory in the final period with the Jackets
in
possession when the game ended.

For the game visitors Capt. Buster Mullin, a 170 lb. tackle, was a standout and many times was fifth
man
in the Jacket backfield.

The Jackets were impressive in their first appearance and displayed a lot of spirit and fire. Defensive
gems were turned in by David Herlong, Gerald Fletcher, and Bobby Lowery. Lowery played his
defensive
wing back post to perfection breaking up the DeLand passing attack more than once and moving in to
smash their ground attack at other times.

Next week the Jackets will play host to visiting Orange Belt Conference foe rough, tough Apopka. Game
time is at eight.
