Leesburg Wins Over Lakeview 7 To 0
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, October 23, 1960
A wide awake fighting Jacket defensive eleven blocked an attempted Lakeview punt late in the first
quarter to set up a Leesburg High TD and then came back in the closing minutes of the first half
the host Red Devils inside their five yard line and the Jackets of Leesburg High came out on top of their
Orange Belt Conference foe the Red Devils of Lakeview High in Winter Garden Friday night to the tune
7 to 0.
That was just about the story of the whole game as defensive stalwarts Mike Sheets, Dillard Copeland
and Gerald Fletcher led a hard charging fightin' Jacket forward wall that held the Red Devils off all night
long to preserve the win for Leesburg High.
The game started with the usual early game jitters as the twin elevens exchanged fumbles at midfield
the Red Devils drove for two consecutive first downs to the Jackets eleven yard line. A fifteen yard
set them back and the Jackets took over on downs. The Jackets offensive failed to get off the ground
they punted to the Devils forty four. The alert Jacket linemen stopped the Maroon and White offense
dead and then boomed through the line to block an attempted kick and the Jackets scored from thirty
yards out. After a first down on the Lakeview twenty four Leesburg called on their bread and butter
Handy Randy Brown and he responded with a nifty twenty yard run on the keeper play. Two plays later
Doug Mumford had the six points and Randy Brown followed with a place kick for the point after and
ended the scoring for the night.
The twin elevens exchanged punts in the second quarter until late in this period the Jackets fumbled
lost on their on thirty yard line. From this spot the Maroon and White moved goalward with Quarterback
John Terrell aiding the cause considerably with a twenty yard jaunt only to be hauled down on the
five yard line. At this point he Jacket defensive eleven came into its own to preserve the seven point
margin and rose time and again to stop the Devils offensive attack dead. Four plays later the Jackets
over at their two yard line in one of the best goal line stands seen for some time in loop football circles.
It turned into a kicking game in the second half as time and again the big foot of Maurice Hazen, the
Devils six foot five inch 230 lb. Halfback set the Jackets back with punts that boomed forty seven and
yards. Just before the end of the third quarter the Paul Adams coached Red Devils cranked up their
offense again and moved from their own fourteen with a series of pass patterns and running plays to
up four consecutive first downs to the Jackets twenty five. At that point the Jackets slammed the door in
their face and stopped the attack in its tracks.
In the fourth quarter the Orange and Black of Leesburg High got its offense into high gear again as they
moved from their own thirty to the host elevens fourteen yard line. The big gainer in this drive was a forty
four yard aerial from quarterback Randy Brown to ever and with less than three lost the ball on downs
however and with less than three minutes left in the game the Red Devils cranked up their aerial attack
and moved to the Jackets thirty five before the Whitey Smith Coached crew plucked one of their passes
out the air to stop their attack and sew up the ballgame.
Next week the Jackets will be traveling to Sanford where they will take on another OBC foe Seminole
Injury riddled Leesburg High is expected to have its hands full next week just as well as it did Friday
against Lakeview but if Line Coach Jack Love can bring his charges along as well next week as he
season long this Leesburg High eleven will be a team to reckon with before the football wars are over
