Tavares Edges Leesburg 7-6 In Elks Bowl Game
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, December 4, 1960
A fired up Tavares Bulldogs eleven took the measure of a so so Leesburg Jackets eleven to the tune
of 7 to 6 in the Ninth Annual Elks Bowl Classic at Memorial Field Friday night. End Buddy Walters
the last of a trio of Leesburg fumbles at the Jackets forty yard line to set up the scoring drive and
Quarterback Howard Ehler carried over on a keeper play for the TD. The touchdown scamper carried
thirteen yards. Fullback Ronnie Pursell ran the point after for the margin of victory.
The cool 50-degree weather kept a good many of the fans away and no doubt affected the offensive
punch of the twin elevens until the fourth quarter when all the scoring was done. The first quarter turned
into a punting game as a scoring threat and seemed to be content with testing each defenses.
Midway in the second quarter the Bulldogs advanced to the Jackets twelve where a stout Leesburg line
led by the likes of Gerald Fletcher and Hunt Paulling threw them for a loss and a fifteen yard penalty
ended their scoring threat. A pass interception by Tavares sandwiched in between an exchange of
fumbles ended the first half with the Andy Caldwell coached visitors having the edge in statistics with
first downs and 7 yards on the ground to one first down and a mere 26 yards for the Orange and Black
The Jackets opened up in the second half and in the third quarter moved to the Bulldogs five yard line
where Tavares held. A field goal try from the seventeen was blocked. A big ground gainer in this drive
was a pass play that covered thirty yards from Randy Brown to David Webster.
Just after the start of the final quarter End Buddy Walters jumped on a Leesburg fumble at the Jackets
forty yard line to set yup the scoring drive. From this point the Bulldogs moved goalward with two
consecutive first downs Quarter Howard Ehler crossed the double stripe standing up for the six points.
The play carried thirteen yards Ronnie Pursell, the Bulldogs 10 lb. Fullback ran the extra point for the
margin of victory.
The Jackets were quick to bounce back with a scoring drive of their own that moved sixty yards from
own forty following the Tavares kickoff. End Max Wettstein fought off a Tavares defender to haul in a 34
yard toss from Quarterback Randy Brown that ate up most of this yardage. Halfback David Webster
racked up the TD with a six yard scamper into the end zone. The kick for the extra point was wide.
The Jackets had one more try for the go ahead TD but the best they could do was their own forty three
yard line where the game ended.
Ronnie Pursell, the big Bulldog Fullback, was as tough a youngster as the Jackets have faced all year
long and was the difference in victory or defeat for the visitors. Not only did he score the point after for
the margin of victory but he managed to carve out forty yards on the ground for the night and continued
to harass Quarterback Brown throughout the night. From his linebacker spot the 190 lb. Senior
threw he Jackets field general for substantial losses time and again. Handy Randy ended up the night
a -16 yard figure in the statistics column for one of his poorest showings of the year. As Randy goes so
go the Jackets has been true all year long and Friday night was no exception. A lot of credit for the
Jackets TD has to go to the little general however as he set up the six points when he personally got
a first and ten on the Bulldogs six yard line. It was on a keeper play and a fourth and two that Randy
attempted to skirt his own left end only to be surrounded by a host of red shirted Bulldogs. The quick
thinking youngster reversed his field and hustled over a would be tackler to pick up the necessary two
yards for the first down. It was one of the best displays of sheer guts and determination seen at
Field in some time.
Along their forward wall the Bulldogs got a whale of a game out of Tackle Rodney Wilburn and End
Walters. The loss was the Jackets third against one in Elks Bowl competition all against Mid Lakes
Conference foes. It was the Bulldogs first appearance in the Elks Bowl.
