Jackets Up For DeLand

The return of 205 lb. tackle Tom Willis brought the fightin' Jackets of Leesburg High back to full strength
for their season's opener against DeLand Friday night only to suffer a setback when End Jon Axford
came out of a recent practice session with a severe ankle sprain. The senior lettermen is expected to
be ready to go come Friday night though.

Spirit and competition continues to be at an all time high on the Head Coach Whitey Smith and his staff
expect to field two offensive units Friday night that are just about on a par with each other. Rough tough
DeLand should provide the locals with plenty of competition and give the coaching staff a real chance to
rate the youngsters for the future.

This will be th fourth meeting between these two elevens with the Jackets holding a 2 to 1 edge at this
writing. DeLand continues to be the pre-season conference favorite however, and the Jackets who
finished in the runner-up spot last year will have to be at their best.

Two-hundred-thirty-five pound tackle Marcus Lawrence continues to be one of the outstanding linemen
in the Jacket forward wall thus far and much is expected of this senior lettermen this year. Jimmie Pelt,
another senior letterman at tackle, has shown flashes of some sharp blocking and crisp tackling and
may need the heat of battle to develop into an able running mate for Lawrence, Mike Bays who moved
up to the varsity from the JayVees midway through these early practice sessions continues to battle it
out for a starting role.

End Max Wettstein is expected to be the key target for the Jackets aerial game this year and thus far has
shown good running ability when he has been sable to latch onto the ball. His downfield blocking has
helped to spring the Jacket backs loose for long gains against the red-shirted JayVees.

Today the Jackets will sharpen up their kicking game with kickoff and punt returns and patterns mixed
in with passing drills. Some attention to their goal line defenses will wind up practice for this week.
Tomorrow the boys will dress out for team pictures and Friday they'll be making the long trek to DeLand
to kick off their 1961 season. A large crowd of Jacket followers are expected to cheer the boys on in the
Volusia County city.
