Leesburg High Coach Reports On 1961 Football
By Head Football Coach "Whitey Smith"

The opening of the 1961 football campaign is right around the corner. In less than three weeks, the
Jackets will begin their serious work in preparation for one of the toughest schedules the Leesburgers
have had in many a year. Organized practices will begin Wednesday, August 16, with more than 70
expected to report.
Due to new and better insurance coverage for the players, which will as in the past be furnished by the
Dads Club, new policies have of necessity been placed in effect. It was previously planned that all ninth
grade boys would report with the Junior Varsity and be assigned from there to the Junior High program
after the opening of school. This will not be possible under the new insurance coverage, therefore ninth
graders will not report August 15, as previously announced, but must wait until the opening of Junior
practice sessions. This will not eliminate ninth graders from participation on the Varsity or Junior
but will limit the number to the boys invited to participate by the coaches. It is anticipated that three or
of the more experienced ninth graders will be assigned to Junior Varsity this year rather than Junior
in order to give them the benefit of tougher experience and more rapid development.
Another change necessitated by the new coverage will require that each varsity and junior varsity
participant place a $5 deposit with the Athletic Department, along with the $2.50 required school
insurance, before participating in the program. The $5 deposit will be refunded to all players remaining
the squad later in the season. Players dropping out will of necessity forfeit their deposit. This change
been brought about due to the high cost of premium, which prohibits the expense of coverage to player
who do not stick with the program.
Physical examinations for all 10th, 11th and 12th grade football players, plus the few invited 9th
will be given at the High school on the morning of August 15. Players are advised to get their
examinations then, or they will miss possibly a week of practice which could result in their not being
available for the first few games. All players are to bring $7.50 with them to the physicals. This will buy
their normal school accident insurance, plus cover the $5.00 deposit on the football insurance. The
is refundable to all who remain on the squads, but the $2.50 is not as this is the regular required
There will be a meeting later in August, after football practice has gotten underway for all parents of
football players in senior high school. The purpose of this meeting will be to explain the insurance
as well as meet the new and old coaches and become acquainted with the school Athletic Program.
