LEESBURG — Titusville Astronaut High School got touchdowns from fullback Greg Hovis and tailback
Britt Friday night to lead the War Eagles to a 20-0 victory over Leesburg in a Class AAA, District 5 game.
Hovis was the workhorse for the War Eagles, picking up 162 yards on 16 carries, including runs of 35
The win hikes Astronaut's record to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the district. The Yellow Jackets fall to 2-4, 0-3.
About 1,200 fans turned out to see the game at Memorial Field.
Both teams struggled for most of the first half, trading punts, penalties and some good shots on
The War Eagles got their first score with 46 seconds left in the first half when Hovis capped a 49-yard
drive with a touchdown run on fourth down and inches. The kick by Roy DeYoung gave Titusville a 7-0
lead at the half.
Astronaut added another score with just more than two minutes left in the third quarter when tailback
Johnny Brown leaped in from a yard out. The kick failed.
A few plays earlier, Brown had scored from the 4-yard line, but the touchdown was nullified because of
motion penalty. Brown's 1-yard plunge culminated a 84-yard drive that was set up by the War Eagles'
Britt's 2-yard touchdown run and the point after by DeYoung rounded out the scoring with just under
minutes left in the game.
Britt, who came into the game as the top rusher (789 yards) and scorer (11 TDs) in Central Florida,
up 46 yards on 11 carries. Britt was shut down by Leesburg's defense during the first half, and
the senior runner was used only sparingly.
Leesburg had been hurt badly in recent games because of fumbles. They gave up none Friday night.
Astronaut's 6-2, 300-pound tackle Kerry Jones received a back injury late in the game and was taken
Leesburg hospital by ambulance.
Next week Astronaut will host intracity rival Titusville High School Leesburg wil play at Inverness Citrus.
