Palatka Pounces On Leesburg
Lake sports
November 9, 1996|By Barry Farley, Sentinel Correspondent

LEESBURG — Palatka pounced on Leesburg for 30 points in the first half and coasted
to a 30-7 district win at Dabney Stadium Friday night.

The Panthers took advantage of four Leesburg fumbles and a blocked punt in the first
two quarters, and Palatka quarterback Sharod Gilyard proved opportunistic and
efficient as he connected on all three of his first-half passes for touchdowns.

It was Leesburg, however, that had the first break. After Leesburg defensive end Apollo
Stinson recovered a Palatka fumble on the Yellow Jacket 1-yard line, it looked as if the
Yellow Jackets had dodged the bullet. But on the very next play, running back Grover
Gaddy was tackled in the end zone for a safety, and when Gilyard found running back
Lloyd Styles on a slant for an 11-yard touchdown score the Panthers were up 9-0.

On the next Palatka possession, Gilyard found Johnny Givens on a second-and-19
play, and the 26-yard reception moved the Panther lead to 16-0. Palatka added to the
barrage with a 29-yard rush by Styles and a 35-yard Gilyard-to-Givens connection to
put the score at 30-0.

The second half was played from the defensive standpoint. Leesburg averted the
shutout when, with 2:32 left in the game, junior cornerback Terrance Sager stepped in
front of the Palatka receiver and took the interception 45 yards for the score.

Palatka moved to 7-2 overall, 4-1 in district, and coach Jim McCool credited both teams
with solid play.

Yellow Jacket coach Ed Hoffman concurred. ''I'm real proud of them - the kids played
their hearts out,'' he said.

Leesburg finished its season at 1-9.
