Mercer Football Preseason Report - August 7

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University football team went through its second two-a-day of the 2014
preseason camp on Thursday at Mercer University Stadium. The Bears started the day with an 8 a.m.
practice, before holding afternoon positional group meetings. The team wrapped up the day with a 5 p.
m. workout.

After discussing the positional battles on the offensive side of the ball on Wednesday, Mercer head
coach Bobby Lamb turned his attention to the defense. The Bears' defense returns all 11 starters from
the 2013 squad that held opponents to 21 points or less on six occasions including two shutouts.

"Our coaching staff has a lot of things to figure out yet on the defensive side of the ball. If we played
today, you would only have a couple guys that will know they are going to start, Tosin Aguebor, Corey
Lockett and Alex Avant. After that it is wide open, we have a lot of guys that are hungry for playing time
and hungry for playing position."

DEFENSIVE LINE
"It is going to be a defensive line by committee this season. We have three guys that have played really
well at nose guard in Tunde Ayinla, Bret Niederreither and Austin Barrett. Tunde is also playing some
end along with Cody Jones and Kelly Brooks, who each played a lot last year."

"Andrew Stanley is getting some reps at defensive end as is Hank Avery, who had a great spring. Jalen
Penn is a young guy that has shown a lot of promise as well. We like to play a lot of defensive linemen
since it is a very taxing position. If we can be three-deep across the board, we will be more than happy
with that."

LINEBACKERS
"We have some experienced guys at inside linebacker in Tyler Ward and Devin Davidson, who played a
lot of snaps last season. Tripp Patterson was here in the spring and has been impressive and then the
newcomer,
Lee Bennett, has been really good in drills as well."     1   of   2     Next
