Danny Trevathan returns to practice Monday

The Chicago Bears have been done both of their projected starting inside linebackers with Danny
Trevathan on the mend with an injury and Roquan Smith holding out. On Monday, Trevathan was able
to get back onto the practice fields. He has been dealing with a hamstring injury since the start of
camp, so his return is a welcomed one for a group that has been using Nick Kwiatkoski and John
Timu with the first-team defense early on in training camp.

As important as Smith will be for Chicago once he gets onto the field, Trevathan is also a key part of
the Bears defense. A sixth-round selection out of Kentucky by the Denver Broncos in 2012, Trevathan
quickly asserted himself as a key part of their defense. As a rookie he appeared in 16 games,
recording 33 tackles, one sack and three pass deflections. He became a full-time starter in 2013,
recording 129 tackles, two sacks, 10 pass deflections, three interceptions and three forced fumbles.
An injury forced him to miss 13 games in 2014 before he helped lead the Broncos to a Super Bowl
victory in 2015. That season he started 15 games, recording 109 tackles, six pass deflections, two
interceptions and one defensive touchdown. In Super Bowl 50 he recorded eight tackles and
recovered one fumble in the victory.

In his first year with the Bears, he struggled with injuries, starting eight games and making nine
appearances. He ended the year with 66 tackles, one sack and four pass deflections. Injuries got the
best of him at times last season but he finished the season with 89 tackles, two sacks, five pass
deflections, one interception and one forced fumble. When Trevathan has been on the field for the
Bears the last two seasons the defense is noticeably improved.

Getting Trevathan back onto the field is a good sign for Chicago, but it is highly unlikely he will appear
in Thursday night's preseason debut against the Baltimore Ravens in the Hall of Fame Game. The
Bears will be giving many of their back-end-of-the-roster players get a chance to prove themselves in
front of a national audience on NBC that night.

According to Bear Report's Zack Pearson, Trevathan was not the only Bear getting back onto the field
on Monday morning in Bourbonnais. He noted rookie pass-rusher Kylie Fitts, rookie cornerback Kevin
Toliver and veteran cornerback Sherrick McManis were all back at practice at Olivet Nazarene
University. Fitts has been one turning heads in camp but missed practices over the weekend with an
arm injury. If he is healthy he should see some extensive playing time in the preseason opener on
Thursday.

Toliver returned to practice after missing some time with a quadriceps injury. He flashed early in camp
before going down with the injury. McManis saw action for the first time on Monday after missing all the
previous camp practices with a hamstring injury of his own.

The Bears vs. Ravens game will take place at 7:00 p.m. CT on Thursday night from Canton, Ohio.
