Spurgeon Cherry Left End Frosh Game Tomorrow

Sports Staff
The Leesburg Commercial
Friday, October 11, 1929

When the
University of Florida's Baby Gators meet the Auburn frosh tomorrow afternoon on Fleming
field in Gainesville, one of Leesburg's 1928 football stars, Spurgeon Cherry will lead the Gators'
lineup. Illness which confines him to the infirmary will keep Joe Jenkins, another the Yellow Jacket
stars, from playing.

Stories in the
Florida Times-Union and the Tampa Tribune give prominence to the two Leesburg
players in forecasting the lineup and probable outcome of the game. The Tribune lists Cherry at left
end in the lineup, and say, "... With one exception. Joe Jenkins, star of the 1928 Leesburg eleven, the
Baby Gators are primed for their initial test. Of two lineups indicated today by Cowell, only two of the 22
athletes are not Florida boys, and both are on the second eleven. Boys from the smaller high schools
of Florida have been monopolizing the spotlight during the early weeks.

In The Times-Union, the two 'Jackets are mentioned as follows: Robinson is scheduled to handle the
fullback post as Joe Jenkins, outstanding contender for the position, probably will not be able to see
battle due to an injury which has not healed.... Among the linesmen that will see action on Saturday,
Cherry at left end is probably the most outstanding."
