Former Jackets Standout Stan Himelsbaugh played in the first game ever at Tampa
Stadium during the 1967 season. Himelsbaugh and his teammates were ranked third in
the nation and dismantled the University of Tampa 38-0. November 4, 1967.

LEESBURG - Former Jackets Standout Stan Himelsbaugh (Leesburg High School, Fruitland Park
Florida) enjoyed the tradition of Tennessee Volunteers football program during his collegiate career.
Himelsbaugh and his teammates were crowned National Champions at the end of 1967 NCAA
football season. HImelsbaugh also was a part of the
opening of Tampa Stadium on November 4, 1967.

The University of Tennessee and the University of Tampa were the first teams to play a game in
Tampa Stadium. The third-ranked Volunteers defeated the Spartans 38-0 day in front of a crowd of over
27,000, who enjoyed the debut of the new $4,000,000 Stadium.

In 1967,
University of Tampa alumni and fans formed the Sword and Shield, an organization that
raised $139,360 for the athletic programs. Tampa Stadium was built and brought about the glory days
of UT football.
