LEESBURG - After Leesburg High's football season ended in December, Yellow Jacket Coach Gene
Foster sat down with senior fullback John Talley to make out a list of colleges where Talley might like to
spend the next four years.

They came up with six schools, and decided that Talley should tour all of them before settling on one.
But after a visit three weeks ago to Valdosta State, Talley decided that he didn't need to see
the other five. Tuesday night, he made it official, signing a grant-in-aid to play for the Blazers.

'When I went up there with Coach Foster, I liked the whole school atmosphere," Talley explained. "I
talked to some of the players and they were all nice. And my uncle lives there."

Talley, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, accepted a half scholarship with the NCAA Division II school, which
plays in the Gulf South Conference in their first year of varsity football in 1982, the Blazers finished
5-5-1.

"It's kind of exciting to be in good football country," Talley said. Two other schools he considered,
Georgia Southern and Jacksonville State (Ala.), play in the same conference.

"That's in what's known as the best small-college conference in the U.S, he pointed out Foster, who
noted that Gulf South teams have played in the Division II title game each of the last two years. "If you
don't play good up there, they shoot you."

If Talley matches his senior season in high school, he should be safe. Although he missed an entire
game and parts of three others, he gained 965 yards on 146 carries, a 6.6 average.

He should get plenty of work in the Blazers' offensive set-up, according to Foster.

"They have a split-back offense," the Leesburg coach said, "and when they do go to the I they have a
strong fullback. That's right up John's alley."

Foster said the Valdosta State coaches were especially impressed with Talley's running in the Bishop
Moore game, when he gained 175 yards in a 32-14 Yellow Jacket win. But Foster said he will remember
performances in a 42-28 loss to St.  Cloud (151 yards on 23 carries) and a season-opening 12-6 win
over Lake Weir (28 carries for 185 yards).
