Gators Kick off Spring Football

Leesburg's Taylor may figure in plan

By Gregg Doyel
Daily Commercial Correspondent
March 17, 1992

GAINESVILLE  - Shane Matthews' right arm isn't the No. 1 topic of concern as the Florida Gators begin
spring practice today. His backside is.

That's where
Matthews could spend much of the 1992 season if the Florida coaching staff can't find
quality replacements for four starting linemen who used up their final year of eligibility last season.

The only returner with any offensive line experience is senior
Jim Watson, who started all 12 games at left
guard but was picked on by opposing defenses. He's listed as doubtful for spring drills after suffering a
broken foot this winter.

That leaves a group of mostly freshmen and sophomores vying to replace two All-Americans -
center Cal
Dixon and guard Hesham Ismail - and two-year starting tackles Tony Rowell and Mark White.

Leesburg's Ryan Taylor, a redshirt junior, was second string last season and could figure into the Gators'
plans at tackle.

"We'll wait and see and hopefully some of the younger guys will step up," Spurrier said. We're going to
give everybody a chance, they can be assured of that."

Possibly the most interested person will by Matthews, the SEC's Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991.
Matthew, holder of 21 school and six SEC records, finished fifth in the 1991 Heisman Trophy voting after
passing for 3,130 yards and 28 touchdowns. He compiled those numbers with help from the Gators best
line since "The Great Wall of Florida" protected Kerwin Bell in 1984.

"I'm not worried about it," Matthews said.

"I might have to roll out a little more at first but someone will step forward and they'll be fine pretty quick."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball,
Wildwood's Ellis Johnson, a reserve who lettered as a true
freshman in 1991, could use the spring as a springboard to a starting spot on the defensive line.

Johnson, 6-foot-2, 265 pounds, was the Gators' top backup at tackle behind departed starter
Brad
Culpepper. William Gaines, another backup at tackle, had shoulder surgery this winter and will miss spring
drills, opening the door for Johnson to claim a spot as the top lineman.

"We lost lots of experience on both sides of the ball," Spurrier said. "The focus this spring will be to find
replacements, of course. Ellis looks as good as anyone there on the defensive line."

Other holes Florida will look to fill are at linebacker, where
All-SEC selections Tim Paulk (inside
linebacker) and
Ephesians Bartley (gatorback) graduated; and kicker, where All-SEC pick Arden
Czyzewski graduated.

Today's practice is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the practice field and is open to the public. Florida is
scheduled to practice Tuesday and Thursday nights and Fridays and Saturdays.
