CORAL GABLES - When D'Mauri Jones was growing up in the city of Leesburg he had visions of one day
wearing the orange and green for the University of Miami. His dream came true earlier this year when he
signed a National Letter Of Intent to play football at the ACC school. Jones is the first football player from
Leesburg High School to ever play with the "U".
Miami the winner of five NCAA National Championships conducted it's annual Media Day this past
weekend and Jones was there to soak up every moment of it.
"Never settle for getting from point A to point B," Jones said. "The sky is the limit for everyone, make it
what you want it to be."
Jones has had great camp so far this preseason and has caught the eye of Miami's Offensive Coordinator
When asked who was standing out on the offense, Offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch said he liked all five
wide receiver signees: Robert Lockhart, Malcolm Lewis, D’Mauri Jones, Herb Waters and Jontavious
Carter. They’re “all playing very well right now,” Fisch said.
Jones is involved in some intense competition at the wide receiver spot in camp. He will have to beat a
couple of other freshmen in order to receive playing time this fall. Hurricanes head coach Al Golden says
that he has no problem starting a freshmen during a interview on Media Day.
“I’m not leery at all,” coach Al Golden said. “Our job is to get the talent into the game and find ways to do
that. Clearly, there’s some freshmen who have made some waves here and are competitors. My overall
feeling with the freshmen is, I’ve never seen a group that … the preparation side. It means something to
them. They compete every day. They’re not disrespectful. They compete every day with their peers.”
What they are saying about JONES...
Jones is a very athletic and gifted pass catcher with very good size, long arms and excellent
height. He has a fairly thick build and is a very smooth athlete for his size. He is only going to
get bigger. Is imposing off the line. Has the ability to go up and compete for the jump balls.
Excellent ball skills.
