Seven Eagles make All-State

South Lake had enough to celebrate with its first ever postseason win this past football season.

Now the Groveland school has something else to cheer about. Seven Eagles' football players were
named to the Florida Sports Writers Association's Class 4A All-State team.

Leesburg, which made the playoffs and finished with a 6-5 record in 2000, put two players on the
all-state team.

South Lake coach Charles Weems said he wasn't surprised so many of his players made the list.

"Getting seven on the all-state team that says a lot about this group," said Weems, who led the Eagles
to a 10-2 record and a win over Land O'Lakes in the first round of the playoffs. "We had a special group
this year. Getting so many on the all-state form one area - that's just a great tribute to the players. From
day one they put their mind to getting the job done and they did it."

Topping the list for South Lake were offensive lineman Ryan Carter and wide receiver Rod Roberson
as first-team selections.

Weems said he was proud of Carter, a junior, we didn't make it far in the playoffs, so not many coaches
got to see me and I didn't think the media paid attention to offensive linemen.

"It just blew my mind when my coach called me last night. He said he didn't know for sure, but said I
had a good chance. I hope to make it again next year."

Roberson was actually named as the first-team defense's "athlete" selection. The versatile senior
played defensive back rushed for 647 yards at running back, caught 36 passes for 649 yards and
scored 11 touchdowns.

Nelson Russell, The Daily Commercial's offensive player of the year, was able to turn his 1,572 yards
rushing and 28 total touchdowns into a second-team running back selection.

Linebacker Dustin Sparks (125 tackles, two sacks) and defensive lineman Paul Prince (109 tackles
and three sacks) were named to the third team at their respective positions.

Sough Lake also had quarterback David Taylor 1,297 yards and 11 touchdowns passing) and
defensive lineman Cory Bryant (75 tackle, one sack) make all-state as honorable mentions.

For Leesburg, wide receiver Jermaine Orr made it as the third-team kick returner. Orr scored nine
touchdowns combined receiver and off kick returns in 2000 and intercepted five passes.

Teammate Craig Williams was an honorable mention at linebacker after he finished the season with
89 tackles and six sacks.
