Three Jackets Make All-Conference Selections

Miller, Girtman and Phillips Named on Select Squad of Northeast
Conference

By Sports Staff
The Leesburg Ledger
Friday, December 27, 1935

Leesburg's 1935 edition of the Yellow Jacket football team placed three in the select class when all
conference squads were announced last Saturday in Elmo Miller at quarter, James Girtman at end
and
Philips at tackle. These three were closely followed by Joe Knowles at full and Harvey Scarborough at
half
on the second squad, with Ned Searcy at halfback post and Frank Lindeman, Jr. at guard getting
honorable mention. Taking the eleven from man to man, the 1935 edition of the Yellow Jackets came
thru
the season with considerable honors. This is apparent when seven men can attain all conference
consideration to the extent of either placing on first or second squad and honorable mention.

Nearly all the teams that played Leesburg were always instructed to "watch Miller" attesting to the
ability of
the Jacket elusive quarterback. Phillips too was a power at right tackle and few teams lie to run a play
at
his post. As a matter of fact, plenty of the opposing teams choose to try the other side of the line rather
than run into Phillips.

James Girtman deserves lots of credit for the very fine game he played all season at end. Known
locally
as "All American" Jimmy Girtman certainly deserves his "All Conference" honors on his season
record at
the end play. In addition, he was one of the deadliest point kickers in the conference, a result of his
many
long hours of practice.

Harvey Scarborough, captain of this year's eleven is very much in the class of Girtman. Not big
physically,
he attained his position by long practice and developed into one of the fastest men in the Northeast
conference Joe Knowles, showed wonderful improvement too during season, developing sturdy play
in
backing up the line and a hard driving fullback.
