Real Football Weather Greets Teams In Coldest Game Of The Local
Season

By Sports Staff
The Leesburg Ledger
Friday, December 14, 1934

Fingers numbed by an icy wind that blew out of the north were just a part of the real football weather that
greeted the Jackets in their last game with the St. Augustine Mullets here last Friday evening. And the
cold weather served to hold the crowd down to the smallest attendance of the season. With it all, the
locals played a steady brand of football. Receiving the kickoff at the opening of the game, the Jackets
steadily marched down the field with six first downs to score a touchdown. It was the last game for
Pennington, Brady, Golden, Hall, Wilkins, Boyd, Johnston and Oxford, all of whom have acquitted
themselves with honor for the Jackets. Pennington, Brady and Oxford were all standouts receiving
recognition for All-Southern and All-Conference honors. W. T. Hall played some excellent football for his
only year on the first squad. Billy Johnston has played a reliable game for two years and Boyd has been
an able substitute tackle, going into several games to hold up his end of the line in a credible manner.
Wilkins Also played an excellent brand of football. Golden, in spite of being handicapped by injuries all
season has been a real sparkplug for the team Leroy Helton, another senior, must not be forgotten. He
was an able tackle previous to being eliminated by injuries in the Daytona game. Big and strong, he was a
real power.

Shugart kicked off to Miller who received on his own 10 returning the ball to the 20. Joe Knowles made 3
thru right tackle and then 7 for a first down. Scarborough made 1 at center, Miller 5 around left end and
Joe Knowles 5 and a first down. Brady hit left tackle for 4, Scarborough around right end for 1 and Brady
thru center for 12 and a first down on St. Augustine 38. Knowles made 3 thru left guard, Scarborough 7
thru left tackle. here the Jackets got a 5 yard penalty but on the next play Joe Knowles drove thru for a
first down on St. Augustine 26. Scarborough's attempted pass was blocked but Miller raced around right
end for 6 and Brady went 12 for another first down. Joe Knowles made 3 thru right tackle, and
Scarborough thru same place for 3 to the Mullets' 6 yard line. Miller's pass was incomplete. Girtman was
in the open but the pass was bad. Scarborough passed to Brady for touchdown. Joe Knowles hit left
guard for extra point. Score: Jackets 7, Mullets 0.

Jack Knowles kicked off 10 yards. Cummings made 6 stopped by Fonia. Calhoun no gain Cummings
attempted pass incomplete. Cummings kicked to Brady for 9 yards, Joe Knowles failed to gain as the
quarter ended.
