35 High School Hopefuls Vie For Gridiron Spots On Yellow Jackets '57 Squad
By Sports Staff
The Daily Commercial
Tuesday, August 20, 1957
The World Series of baseball is still a good six-weeks away, but the air around the
Leesburg High School
Memorial Field yesterday was filled with pigskins.
Head football coach Bill Brewer ran an approximate 35 gridiron hopefuls through the
season's initial
practice session aimed at separating the men from the boys. (Or maybe it just looked
that way to us
because were a little out of shape.)
The boys seemed to hold up well under the strenuous calisthenics. There were no
fatalities although
heavy breathing was quite evident.
Brewer said he estimated an additional 10 to 15 players would report for training when
the school term
begins September 3.
Under the watchful eyes of assistant coaches Carleton Adams, Frank Singletary and
Fred McDaniel the
boys flipped the ball, practiced hand-offs, and tried the hands at snatching the elusive
pigskin in flight.
Mostly they ran, trotted, galloped and occasionally walked.
Brewer is optimistic about his team's chances this year. After watching the boys for the
hour and a half
session he stated "if spirit means anything we'll have a good season."
The former Chester, Illinois high school coach, experiencing his first season at
Leesburg, knows what he
expects from a player and seems to possess the ability of knowing just how far to go to
get it. He has a
light-handed approach which received great results for a first day tryout.
We found it impossible to form 35 individual opinions after watching one work-out, but six
boys showed, in
our opinion, great possibilities. The Blount brothers, Bob, and his younger but bigger
brother, David,
worked well as a center and quarterback combination.
Bill Standridge, Chuck Showley, Roger Clark and Wayne Douglas may also prove the
nuclei for a small,
but fast moving Yellow Jackets squad. The team, admittedly, is short on weight, but what
it lacks in beef
may be overpowered by fast moving receivers and shifty back. Time will tell.
The Yellow Jacket open at home September 20 against Ocala. The season finishes with
the traditional
Thanksgiving game, November 22, with the boys facing Eustis away. Eight games fill out
the interim.
The 1957 schedule:
Sept. 20, Ocala (H); Sept. 27, Apopka (A); Oct. 4, Melbourne (A); Oct. 11, Lakeview (H);
Oct. 18, Cocoa
(H); Oct. 25, Winter Haven (H); Nov. 1, Winter Park (A); Nov. 8, Sanford (H); Nov 15,
DeLand (A); Nov. 22,
Eustis (A).
