Jimmy Kynes Addresses Dad's Club On Eve Of Jackets 1957-1958 Season

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, September 15, 1957

Two-hundred and fifty members and guests attended the annual Dad's Club Banquet,
last night, at the Community Building, Venetian Gardens, in the dual role of honoring
school athletics and hearing Ass't
State Attorney James W. Kynes, guest speaker.

Atty. Kynes, a former standout fullback at the University of Florida and later a
professional gridman in the
Canadian League, kept the audience spellbound with humorous anecdotes of collegiate
and professional
play. Kynes ended his talk on a serious vein advising the athletes to play-to-win, but not
at the expense of
others: he recommended the following of the The Golden Rule as a simplified means of
accomplishing
this end.

Leesburg High School Athletic Director Earl Burt, in a piece-by-piece equipment
account, showed Dad
Club members and guests where approximately $176 annually is spent to keep a boy on
the field. But's
category ran the gamut from a $22.50 helmet to 25-cents worth of tape "used to keep
the boys together
between games."

Dad's Club President L.M. (Junior) Holloway introduced new Leesburg football coach
Billy Brewer who had
much praise for the 1957 Yellow Jackets. His singling out of all boys on both the varsity
and junior varsity
squads was a refreshing surprise in the evening's events. Brewer, not unlike Atty;
Kynes, had his share of
'stories' for the audience.

Officers and trustees of the Dad's Club were introduced as were county school board
members, athletic
coaches, cheerleaders, members of the Leesburg High school swimming team, and
special guests.

Junior Holloway served as master of ceremonies. The invocation was given by Rev.
Beryl Roberts of the
city's First Baptist Church.
