Team Shows Improvement, Brewer Pleased
With Squad
By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, October 27, 1957
The continued improved play of the Leesburg Yellow Jackets has been pleasing to Head
Coach Billy
Brewer and his staff. Line Coach Carlton Adams has been particularly pleased with the
Jacket forward
wall that made such a creditable showing for itself in the second half of last week's
Winter Haven game.
Along the forward wall Roy Laffik and Alex Baetzman have been particularly outstanding
and much time
has been spent in improving their all around play Ken Ferguson at the middle guard
post has been
holding his own against much heavier and more experienced oppostion. The key figure
in the Yellow
Jacket defense continues to be Ferrell Young, however. This junior center played the
entire second half
of last week's game with one eye closed after he caught a Winter Haven extra point
attempt flush in the
face near the end of the first half.
The Junior Varsity game in Winter Park yesterday afternoon allowed Coach Brewer to
five his regulars a
hard earned rest, and to recuperate from multiple bruises incurred in last week's
encounter. Eddie
Parker, Bobby Blount, and Ferrell Young were particularly needing, though neither of
them suffered
serious injuries, and will see full time action this week. Tackle Ray Laffick turned up with
a dislocated
finger but will be able to remain in action just the same.
Today's schedule calls for a full practice complete with scrimmage. Coach Brewer has
shifted his offense
to some extent and has moved Roger Clark into what he refers to as a dual fullback,
teaming with Eddie
Parker in this respect. This is his own version of the T flanker that has worked so well
elsewhere.
Thursday the squad will taper off as they continue to brush up on their defensive
assignments against the
Winer Park offense. Friday the boys will journey to Winter Park for another conference
tilt with one eye on
Homecoming next week when Sanford will be in town.
The support of the Yellow Jacket faithful has been particularly pleasing to the Coaching
staff and the
squad in view of their many adversities this year.
