Blue Devils Whip Yellow Jacket 11

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Friday, October 26, 1958

The score board clock read Winter Haven 33, Leesburg 0, in the Polk County city Friday
night, but the scorebooks kept on the sidelines and in the press box read Winter Haven
13, Leesburg 0, and Officials
20, Leesburg 0 as a stripe shirted, whistle tooting, quartet showed up in their walking
shoes and marched
up and down Denison Field in an awesome display surpassed only by Napoleon's return
from Russia,
Sherman's march through Georgia and the Marines orderly withdrawal from the Yalu.

The Yellow Jackets lost the game to Winter Haven in the first quarter as they fumbled at
their own 40 and
before the two minute mark was reached Winter Haven was out in front on the length of
a four yard
plunge fullback Tom McKean and a place kick by quarterback Bobby Marotti. The next
touchdown allowed
in quick order as the Blue and Gold eleven drove from their won 18 goal ward with a 22
yard jaunt by
halfback Steve Ambrose setting up a 34 yard TD heave from quarterback Marotti to the
high scoring
McKean. The place kick for the point was missed and the first quarter score read 13 to 0.

It was the Yellow Jackets turn as they carried on a sustained drive from their own 11 to
the host club's 22
before they gave up the ball on downs. An incomplete pass on a fourth down free
situation gave the
Jackets another chance on the Blue Devils 30, but the Devils bounced back with a pass
interception that
ended the Jackets scoring threats for the first half. The Blue and Gold eleven moved
from their own 25 to
the Orange and Black 16, where the half ended The officials moved the ball all in the
second half before
Winter Haven decided it was their turn and a combined Marotti runback of a punt and a
penalty gave the
Winter Haven eleven a first down on the Leesburg 11. A 13 yard TD pass from Marotti to
right end Billy
Wilkes gave them the six points. Not long afterward center N. A. Elliot got into the
scoring act when he
stole a Leesburg aerial and aided by a couple of good healthy pushes stumbled his way
goalward from 60
yards out. Leesburg moved the ensuing kickoff from their own 32 to the Winter Haven
25 before they
gave the ball up. They recovered a Winter Haven fumble a few minutes later and moved
back down to the
20, before a pass interception stopped their drive and gave the Blue Devils another
scoring opportunity.

This time they went all the way from their own 18 with a one yard plunge by quarterback
Marotti getting
them the six points.

End Eddie Fletcher and center Ferrell Young played a whole lot of ball in a losing cause
for the Yellow
Jackets and the Jacket backfield moved the ball well each chance they got, but there
was nothing
stopping a bigger more powerful Winter Haven line from turning those fast moving backs
of their loss.
