Jackets Fall Before Strong Auburndale 11
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, October 16, 1960
A fired up band of Auburndale Bloodhounds led by their ball hawking Fullback Jerry Richardson who
racked up three TD's bounced back from a 12 to 0 loss to Dade City last week to hand the Leesburg
High Jackets their second straight loss to the tune of 20 to 6 in the first away game for the locals this
The Blue and Gold of Auburndale High struck early and late to sew up their third win of the year against
two losses. The loss puts the Jackets even for the season at two wins and two losses.
The Jackets recovered an Auburndale fumble on the kickoff and it looked like Dame Fortune was
on the Orange and Black of Leesburg High but a fifteen yard penalty set them back to the Hounds forty
five and their attack bogged down.
Taking the Jacket punt from their own twenty four the Winged T offense of Head Coach Tom Terry
cranked up and moved goalward with four consecutive first downs to give them a first and goal on the
Leesburg three yard line. The Jacket defensive unit rose up though and held them off for three downs
until that pile driving Fullback Jerry Richardson plunged over from two yards out. Quarterback Don
passed to his end Lowell Parker for the point after.
The Jackets bounced right back with a scintillating eighty yard kickoff return by Randy Brown. It was an
electrifying run that thrilled the large following of Jacket fans in the stands and brought despair to the
Auburndale rooters. The try for extra point failed and the Jackets trailed at the quarter 7 to 6. The Jacket
offense got rolling again in the second quarter moving from their own ten to the Auburndale thirty four
before it was stopped. Speedster David Webster reeled off a thirty two yard jaunt in this drive that
the fans to their feet as he tightroped down the sidelines.
Auburndale took the following punt from their won thirty were set back by a fifteen yard penalty and then
moved to within the Jackets ten before the alert David Webster plucked one of their aerials out of the air
and stopped their run for the doublestripe. The hard running Halfback Ronald Hall chipped in a twenty
eight yarder that coupled with a twenty one yard pass ate up the yardage in man size chunks.
The Jackets came out for the second half like they were going to tear the game wide open. Randy
took the opening kickoff and ran it all the way back to the Hounds forty five yard line only to be upset by
the last Blue and Gold defender to get a hand on him. The Jackets moved to the host eleven's twenty
before they lost the ball on downs and the Auburndale offensive went into action once more this time
moving goalward with three consecutive first downs. It was that big Fullback doing most of the damage
again as Jerry Richardson cracked over the Jacket line for twenty one yards on one occasion and then
covered the last twenty two yards to cross the double stripe for the six pointer. A Turner to Hall pass
good for the extra point.
Randy Brown looked like he brought the Jackets even again in the touchdown department with another
one of his patented kickoff returns only to have the TD nullified by a penalty. The repeat kickoff was
by the Jackets at the midfield stripe and they moved to the host twenty six yard line before they lost the
Midway through the final quarter the victorious Hounds returned a Jacket punt to the Leesburg thirty four
yard line where they called on Fullback Richardson again. The big Senior letterman came through
more as he cracked up and over the Jacket forward wall and romped the distance for the six points.
The Jackets got one more chance and moved from their own forty to the Blue and Gold thirty three
a pass interception gave Auburndale the ball in the dying minutes of the game. The game ended on
Jackets forty five.
A large turnout of local fans followed the Jackets to Auburndale and were naturally disappointed in the
loss but the Jackets were hurting with both Roger Clark and David Herlong seeing only limited action.
being able to move up the middle they had to resort to outside plays involving the Quarterback option
play, the keeper play and others. Jimmy Brunson, Senior letterman tackle, was still recuperating from
fingers cut in an accident with a saw and his loss was really felt.
Randy Brown teamed well with Doug Mumford and David Webster to provide the Jackets offensive
Brown specialized in kickoff returns while Webster moved better Friday night than at any time this year.
End Gerald Fletcher played a fine game turning those rampaging Hound backs inside most of the
Charles Sellars and sophomore Ken Smithgall gave a good accounting of themselves as well.
Next week the Jackets return to OBC competition with an away game against Lakeview High of Winter
