Jackets Close Out '61 Season With Haines City

The Jacket faithful are expected to fill the stands to capacity in Haines City Friday night as the locals
close out their regular season play against the Southwest Conference Hornets. In their first meeting
last year at Memorial Field the Joe Stangry coached eleven came out on top of a 14 to 0 score.

The 46 to 0 romp over Winter Park last week cost the Jackets the services of halfback Keith Sanders,
who had just moved up from the junior varsity. The promising youngster came out of the game before
the half with a broken leg. Center Kenny Smithgall suffered an injury to his right shoulder and had
already been slowed by an earlier injury to his left shoulder. He has been in pads this week though and
is expected to be back with the starting eleven. Jeff Butler, who had moved up from the junior varsity,
was a capable replacement for the ailing Smithgall last week.

The return of guards Capt. Bobby Mock and Jim Huff has been a welcome sight on the practice field
this week as well as th e return of halfback Stan Gideons who has been force to sit out the last two
games. Knee injuries have hobbled tackle Jimmie Pelt, defensive end Jimmie Bates, and fullback
David Herlong.

Pelt has been slowed a good part of the year with his knee while Jimmie Bates got himself a
touchdown last week when he scooped up a fumble. David Herlong, of course, was the big difference
in the lopsided Leesburg win.

A pair of unsung heroes emerged from that OBC win, however in the person of J. J. Kimmons and
Marcus Lawrence. Kimmons had been shifted to a guard spot to compensate for the loss of Mock and
Huff and came through in fine style as he and the big 235-lb. tackle Lawrence opened up holes time
and again for the Jacket backs to rumble through. This week on the practice field at Leesburg High
tackle Tom Willis has joined this pair in an unbalance line in an effort to provide the Jackets with a
scoring punch against the Hornets.
