A fightin'' Jacket eleven found Haines City and particularly their big fullback David Howell a little tough
Friday night and dropped their season's finale 13 to 7 to the host Hornets. The Jackets went down
fighting though and led by a 7 to 6 margin, until midway in the third period when the Green and White
pushed across their winning TD.

The victorious Hornets drew first blood when they took the opening kickoff from their own thirty-six and
moved goalward with a series of four first downs to give them a first and goal inside the Jacket five.
Fullback Howell broke the scoring ice with a four-yard plunge for the six points. His individual
contribution in this sustained march was good enough for fifty-four of the sixty-four yards that the drive
carried.

A hard charging Green and White forward wall blocked an attempted Jacket punt midway through the
first period, but a stout Leesburg defensive unit led by the likes of Jimmie Pelt, Tom Willis, and Jimmie
Bates forced a fumble, with Bates pouncing on the loose oval.

The Jackets drive started at midfield and culminated with their patented Ronnie Young to Max Wettstein
pass followed by a lateral to halfback Arthur Spence who covered the thirty-three yards necessary for
the TD. Fullback David Herlong, who carried the brunt of the Jacket attack all night long, plunged for the
conversion to put the "Whitey" Smith coached crew ahead.

Most of the remainder of the first half was consumed with a sustained Haines City drive that moved the
ball from their own thirty-three to inside the Jackets five, before the Orange and Black threw them back
and took possession of the ball.

Linebackers David Herlong and Bobby Mock along with end Max Wettstein played key roles in stopping
this drive to preserve their slim one point margin at halftime.
