Defensive Player Of Year Is Greg Johnson

By WAYNE STOKES
Sr. Sports Writer
Daily Commercial

Updated: Tuesday, June 23, 2015, 10:41 a.m.

Back at the typewriter after a great holiday season, it is a pleasure for this writer to start off the new
year with the announcement of the 1970 Defensive Player Of The Year for our area.

This award goes to the outstanding defensive standout in area high school football circles and will be
capped by a trophy presentation to be made at the football banquet coming up shortly.

The winner of the 1970 Defensive Player Of The Year Award is a young man who is known around
state
football circles as a bonafide blue chip college prospect.

Not only does the 1970 award winner have outstanding size, speed, and agility, (all prerequisites to
greatness for a line star), but this young man will return in 1971 for his last year in a genuinely super
career.

With credentials that read like this, the 1970 Defensive player of the year is Greg Johnson, Leesburg
High School's rugged 6-5, 220 pound tackle who just might be the finest in the state, and yet he is only
a junior.

Johnson averaged nine individual tackles, with six assists, in every ballgame that, Leesburg played
during the 1970 campaign. In every game the opposing team tried to double team the cat-like junior
but
rarely with any noticeable success.

Beginning with the opening game of the year, a big win over DeLand, Johnson made his
overwhelming
presence on the field a big factor in the opponents game plan on offense. It became a widely shared
secret among Leesburg opponents that to run at Greg Johnson was suicide, but against the pass the
big lineman was just as effective.

After Leesburg's big victory over DeLand to open the season, the one big factor that led to the Bulldogs
demise was the big play of Greg Johnson. The Bulldog coaching staff called Johnson the finest high
school lineman they had ever watched and this just set the pattern for an outstanding year to follow.

Leesburg's coaching staff is agog at the prospects of having Johnson back in 1971, but in 1970 Greg
Johnson is the Daily Commercial Defensive Player Of The Year.
