Leesburg's Mike Napier has been switched to a defensive backfield post and Memphis State football
people are confident he will do a good job in that position.

Napier played as a defensive back for Coach Wilbur Lofton but gained most of his notoriety as a
quarterback. The Tigers' personnel was the main reason for the switch of Napier from offense to
defense.

Early in the month, Napier was playing behind senior defensive back Jeff Bruner, a two-year letterman.
A Tiger spokesman indicated the coaching staff was not that pleased with Bruner's performance and
that Mike would "be playing a lot of ball." An assistant to Sports information Director Bill Grogan even
went so far as to say that Mike might be starting by mid-season.

In the quarterback race, Napier was behind first-string junior Rick Strawbridge and Steve Leech.
Strawbridge has had a history of knee trouble though, and if an injury occurs Napier might well be
switched back again. If Napier had stayed as a quarterback, he would have seen duty as a backup
man.

The 6-0, 180-pounder didn't seem disappointed by the move, the Tiger source said. Jack Carter,
Memphis St. defensive coach, is well pleased with Napier's efforts in the backfield.

The Tigers have signed a boy whom they rate as one of the top frosh quarterbacks in the nation and
this may have also served to influence the coaches to move Napier to defense.

The Tigers opened last Saturday at home against West Texas St.
