'Canes tricked, not treated in loss to Leesburg

Lake Weir coach Jason Robinson knew his team needed an offensive spark Friday night — even if it had
to come from a defensive special teams play.

A week after passing for 566 yards in a loss to Citrus, the Hurricanes' offense was sputtering against
Leesburg's quarterback pressure and had gained just 38 yards in the first half on seven possessions.

With less than 40 seconds before halftime, Robinson dialed up Lake Weir's second attempt at punt block,
but the gamble was transparent on the opposite sideline. Yellowjackets coach Randy Trivers countered
with a 50-yard fake punt for a touchdown to extend Leesburg's lead to two scores at the break.

From there, the celebration began for the Yellowjackets (6-4), as they learned midway through the
second half that they had earned a Class 7A playoff berth en route to a 31-14 non-district win against the
6A Hurricanes (2-7).

"We got outcoached on the fake punt; we probably should have checked out of that," Robinson said.
"That put us really behind the 8-ball. It was a one-score game up unto that point."

Coming off his record-breaking performance last week, junior quarterback Cutler Blackburn was not able
to get in a similar rhythm with Lake Weir's receivers, who dropped five passes in the first half. Blackburn
got off to a slow, 3-of-10 passing start but rebounded by hitting 8-of-17 passes in the final two quarters,
including a pair of touchdown strikes to senior Shawn Evans.

The quarterback-receiver duo entered the game as the county's leaders in both passing and receiving
yards. Along with their two scores, Blackburn ended with 129 yards and an interception, while Evans had
a game-high six receptions for 79 yards.

"We were concerned with that offense," Trivers said. "Our defensive front did a good job pressuring the
quarterback and forcing some throws that maybe weren't the throws he wanted to make."

While Lake Weir failed to crack midfield until the third quarter and finished with just 190 total yards, the
Yellowjackets were able to win the field position battle and started two of their five second-half
possessions in Hurricanes' territory.

Leesburg quarterback Undra Mitchem also struggled with his accuracy on 10-of-26 completions for 190
yards, but was able to hit the big play when the Yellowjackets needed one. On fourth down with less than
two minutes remaining, Mitchem found sophomore receiver Bryan Jefferson for a 40-yard touchdown to
seal the final 31-14 margin.

"We went three-and-out quite a few times where we weren't able to get going and get off the starting
block," Robinson said. "We've got to work on that and clean it up for next week."
