The Stetson Hatters held the first of three scheduled scrimmages of fall training camp on Saturday
morning, running 129 plays in the two and a half hour session.

A number of front-line players, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, did not participate in the
scrimmage while nursing nagging injuries. That list included defensive backs Donald Payne and
Chris Atkins, linebackers Joseph Morris, Ignacio Madrid and Jeb Boudreaux, and defensive end
Davion Belk.

“It was a first scrimmage, that was clear,” Hatters coach Roger Hughes said. “There were a lot of
mechanical errors. Offensively, we did some good thing but you can’t get too excited about it because
there were a lot of the starters on defense that we held out with injuries. We also can’t get too upset
about what we did on defense for the same reason.”

Early in the scrimmage, it was the offense that took advantage of some big plays behind junior starting
quarterback Ryan Tentler and senior backup Blake Plattsmier. After Tentler led the first unit on a drive
that stalled, resulting in a 20-yard field goal from James LaGamma, he came back on his second
possession and dialed up the long-ball, connecting with sophomore Ja'Vonta Swinton for a 62-yard
scoring strike.

Then it was Plattsmier’s turn to put the ball into the end zone. He also went deep, hooking up with
junior Chris Crawford for a 40-yard TD pass. Crawford made a nice play on the ball, out-jumping
freshman cornerback Jackie Jay Johnson on the play in the front corner of the end zone.

Overall, Tentler completed 7-of-12 passes for 110 yards and the one score while also rushing for 31
yards on five carries in limited duty. Plattsmier, a native of Nevada, completed 7-of-15 passes for 139
yards and a score while also rushing for 21 yards on seven carries.

Sophomore Colin McGovern also got plenty of snaps during the scrimmage, scompleting 8-of-16
passes for 94 yards while rushing for 29 yards on six carries. The other four quarterbacks combined to
complete 2-of-7 passes for 27 yards.

“I thought Ryan looked good and I thought Blake had his best scrimmage,” Hughes said. “I thought
Colin was a little inconsistent because he is still getting a feel for what we are doing on offense. The
freshmen looked like freshmen, but that was the first time they had bullets flying at them, and they
were all live out there. We are pleased with their talent and football IQ, they just have to get used to our
system.”
