Mistakes Too Costly To Overcome for Union in 42-21 Loss

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Mistakes and misfortune put the Union College football team in a hole early, one
it could never dig out of as visting Warner University (Fla.) left with the 42-21 decision on Saturday at
Williamson Stadium.
Union (0-1 overall) racked up 440 yards in total offense, edging Warner (2-0 overall) by 36 in that
category. However, the Bulldogs turned the ball over five times, resulting in 21 Royal points.
"We just made too many mistakes," said head coach Zak Willis. "When you have 440 yards in offense
and lose, that should never happen. We just turned it over way too much."
Warner turned the ball over once, but Union was unable to cash it in for any points.
The Royals scored 21 points quickly with the first 14 happening before the Bulldogs were able to ran an
offensive play. Warner took the opening kick and moved the ball 55 yards in seven plays for the game's
first score, a 15-yard touchdown pass to Roger Allen with 11:35. The ensuing kickoff was a bit short
and took a funny bounce, allowing Warner's Anthony Cesar to recover it on the Union 24. Four plays
later, Bryant Benton scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 6-yard scamper to make it 14-0 with
9:21 left in the first.
Union finally ran an offensive play, but after converting a third-and-7 situation, fumbled the ball away to
give Warner the ball on the Bulldog 39. This drive ended the same way the previous Royal possession
with a Benton 6-yard touchdown run, upping the margin to 21-0 with 4:49 remaining in the quarter.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the second thanks to a LaVance Anderson (SR/Bowling Green,
Ky.) 1-yard touchdown plunge, but Benton added a 53-yard scoring run to send the Royals into the half
up 28-7.
In the third, Union looked like a different team. With the defense keeping the Royals off the field, the
Bulldog offense got rolling as it scored twice to cut the deficit to seven. Chandler Whittlesey
(JR/Columbus, Ga.) hit Darian Patterson (FR/Taylors, S.C.) in the corner of the end zone on a 2-yard
scoring pass, capping a five-play, 26-yard drive. On its next possession, Union marched 83 yards in
eight plays with Whittlesey wrapping up the drive with a 1-yard run to make it 28-21 Warner with 3:58 left
in the third.
Misfortune reared its ugly head in the fourth quarter as two Union turnovers resulted in 14 points for
Warner, sealing the 42-21 result.
"Offensively, we were inconsistent," Willis said of the team's performance. "Defensively, given where we
came from, we looked good at times but not just not enough support for the offensive side of the ball.
That's my fault. I relaxed over there."
By the Numbers
Anderson recorded his second 100-yard rushing game of his career, finishing with 132 yards and a
score on 28 carries. His career his is 142 yards against Kentucky Christian University on Oct. 25, 2014.
Whittlesey passed for 128 yards on 10-of-19 passing while running for 74 yards on 10 attempts.
Benton led the Royals' ground game with 107 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
D.J. Davis completed 11-of-18 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns for Warner.
Jake Averhart (SO/Corner, Ala.) led Union defensively with 11 total tackles, Loronza Smith paced
Warner with 10.
Union rushed for 256 yards. Last season, Union ran for more than 200 yards twice with 219 being the
season high.
The Bulldogs amassed over 400 yards in total offense four times in 2014.
