IOWA CITY, IowaCoach Kirk Ferentz said last week that his Hawkeyes have moved on from their
historic 2015 season. Time had come to build from the ground up with the new Iowa outfit.

In a rare glimpse for the media into practice Wednesday morning, Ferentz held true to his word. The
Hawkeyes worked on basics and fundamentals. That included consensus all-American Desmond
kind and
all-Big Ten Quarterback C.J. Beathard and trickled all the way down to roster.

The press saw about 40 minutes of the workout here at the indoor practice facility in the football
performance center. During that time, Iowa practiced handing off the ball, blocking, defending passes
and punting. The quarterbacks even spent time falling on fumbled snaps.

The depth chart released last week pretty much covered how the Hawkeyes lined up on Wednesday.
Sean Welsh was listed at center and right guard. He snapped the ball with the first unit with Keagan
Render running at right guard.

Beathard and
Tyler Wiegers clearly were the top two quarterbacks. It was hard to tell who was ahead
between redshirt freshman Ryan Boyle and Drew Cook, although the former took snaps before the
latter.

LeShun Daniels and Akrum Wadley occupied the top two running back slots. It appeared Marcel Joly
was ahead of Eric Graham for the third spot but they both received reps with the second team.

Redshirt freshman Colten Rastetter hit some big punts and stood out among that position group.
While sophomore Miguel Racinos was listed as the back-up on the two-deep, redshirt freshman Ben
Canby from
Mount Pleasant (IA) High took second-team reps.

Jerminic Smith, Matt Vandeberg and Riley McCarron showed up as the starting receivers. Jonathan
Parker, Jay Scheel, Adrian Falconer and Emmanuel Ogwo all saw reps with the second unit.

The second-team offensive line included Dalton Ferguson (right tackle), Ryan Ward (right guard), Steve
Ferentz (center), Ross Reynolds (left guard) and Brett Waechter (left tackle).

Derrick Mitchell Jr., who will miss spring ball following surgery, showed up with his arm in an
immobilized sling. Ben Niemann and Greg Mabin, also out during this period after procedures, took
part in stretching drills in street clothes.
