Trevathan might be the 1 free agent that makes sense for
Packers

For a Green Bay Packers fan with no rooting interest in Super Bowl 50, the game provided an
opportunity to focus in on individual players, especially those that are pending free agents.

I know one player I isolated in my viewing of the game was Denver Broncos linebacker Danny
Trevathan, who will be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Trevathan led the Broncos with eight tackles in the Super Bowl and had two key fumble recoveries,
helping Denver win the Lombardi Trophy.

And so as the Packers prepare to enter the offseason, Trevathan might be the free agent that could get
the usually stingy Packers to open their purse strings and bring in some veteran help, a notion that's
only gotten more attention after a report by Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Mike
McCarthy was "fed up" with general manager Ted Thompson's approach to team-building.

The Packers missed out on an opportunity to add an inside linebacker in free agency in 2014 when
good, solid veterans such as Karlos Dansby and D'Qwell Jackson hit the market for a reasonable
price, and perhaps they shouldn't let another opportunity pass them by.

Both players signed four-year deals, Dansby for $24 million, Jackson for $22 million. And a price in
that neighborhood seems reasonable to expect for a player of Trevathan's caliber, although after the
salary cap jumped $10 million last season and is expected to jump again, the price tag is probably
only going up.

Obviously the Packers have to play the situation by ear. They shouldn't get in a bidding war just
because they could use help at the position.

But with Clay Matthews on the move back to outside linebacker, Trevathan is the type of inside
linebacker the Packers currently don't have on their roster, a three-down type of player that can stuff the
run and still hold up in pass coverage.

And with the Broncos expected to invest large sums of money into their own free agents such as Von
Miller and Brock Osweiler, they might not have the capital to retain Trevathan, a possibility we
discussed on Monday's edition of Railbird Central with Ian McCue, who covers the Broncos for
