Clay Sampson

Former Jacket compiles awesome statistics running Denison's
single wing offense

At 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds, his size and strength are certainly not Sampson-like. But the statistics
compiled by Clay Sampson during his four-year football career at Denison University, an NCAA Division
III school located in Granville, Ohio, compare favorably with the awesome tasks accomplished by the
biblical strongman.

In four years as the engineer of Denison's single wing attack, the 1977 Leesburg High School graduate
piled up a phenomenal 6,920 yards in total offense to set a new Ohio Conference record.

Included in that total was a new Denison record for passing yardage with 3,194 yards gained through
the air.

The former Yellow jackets quarterback also set new school records for pass attempts and pass
completion, hitting on 208 of his 401 aerials during his four season.

In addition to his 1,003 yards passing this past season he was 70-of-143 as Denison went 4-4-1,
Sampson was impressive on the ground, rushing for 1,135 yards and 10 touchdowns on 252 attempts
(a 4.1 yard average).

Despite compiling boastful statistics during his career, the 21-year-old tailback is not one to bask in the
light of his accomplishments.
