Football Season Starts With Big Squad Ready Take Field For LHS

Launching their program to procure portable bleachers to be used during the coming football season
for the home games to be played in the Venetian Gardens ball park, the Leesburg Jaycees held a very
enthusiastic meeting last Friday at the recreation center. Fifty Jaycee members attended the meeting
and has as their guests 40 members of the Leesburg high school football squad, four cheerleaders
and Coach Ed Bruner. Each of the guests introduced themselves and gave their position, "as of last
night's practice" said Coach Bruner, after which the coach gave a resume of the prospects for the
coming season, expressed his appreciation of the interest taken by the Jaycees in not only providing
seating capacity for the games but also in the encouragement that they gave to the squad by having
them as their guests for their noon luncheon.

Coach Bruner stated that he would not make any promises regarding the success of the team this year
but did say that he would practically guarantee that the Leesburg team would win more games than
they did in 1945. He stressed the fact that he had a big squad of men, may of whom had played the
previous season and that the boys were very enthusiastic and willing to work hard.

Discussing the use of the ball park this season. Coach Bruner pointed  out that in big stadiums the
best position to watch a game is on the 10 or 15-yard line and he said that personally he would prefer
seeing a game from that position or from a seat in the end zone as from the angle it is possible to see
more of the actual movements and passing plays that at midfield. He stressed that spectators seated
in the present grandstand would have a good view of the game and said that he hoped that the games
this year would not only fill the new concrete bleachers but the grandstand as well.

School Supervisor Ray Hayes also thanked the Jaycees for their sponsorship of the drive for these
portable bleacher sections, stating that they would be used for the visiting team supporters on the far
side of the field, leaving the permanent bleachers and grandstand for the high school students and
football minded Leesburg citizens. These bleacher sections have already been ordered and it is hoped
that they would be here before the first regular game following the game with Wildwood tonight.

Vice-President Bill Girtman, Jr., reporting on the progress made by the drive for Chairman Emil Yde,
stated that contributions were coming in rather slowly and he called on all Jaycees to continue an
active interest in this drive so that the $2000 needed to pay for these bleachers and to provide some
additional equipment for the players would be available when needed.
