The first major step in actual construction of the Leesburg Memorial Athletic Field was made this week
with the announcement that contracts have been awarded for grading work and construction of the track.

Contributions total $11,000 at the present time and more are expected in cash or in time and material
donated. The goal for funds to construct the project was set at $12,000. It is expected, however, that this
figure will be exceeded in the near future.

The Memorial Field committee, under the chairmanship of H. B. Harrell, met Monday night with Nash
Higgins, City of Tampa recreation director. Mr. Higgins is acting as consultant in the project, drawing
upon his wide experience in directing the building of some of the outstanding athletic fields in Florida.
Committee members declared Mr. Higgins will save many dollars through his advice on the matter.

Mr. Higgins went over plans for the project with G. W. Pringle of the Florida Nursery & Landscape
Company and Ray Newell of the Ray-Jay Paving Company. The two concerns will receive the contract
for much of the work on the project.

The Ray-Jay firm will construct a clay track around the field. The Florida Nursery & Landscape Company
will receive the grading and sodding contract Mr. Pringle announced he will deduct 10 per cent of the bid
price as a contribution to the Memorial Athletic Field. Campaign workers have commended Mr. Newell
for his efforts in making the track possible.
